Luxury Spa Flannel Sheet Set Made in Portugal, Queen Review

Luxury Spa Flannel Sheet Set Made in Portugal, Queen

I bought these sheets for my 84-year-old parents as a Christmas gift. While I was in Iowa for the holiday, I washed the sheets and put them on their (twin) beds. They were IN HEAVEN. The next morning, they both reported that it was difficult to get out of bed because the sheets were so wonderful.
From my perspective, the sheets were heavier than most competitors, were very well made, they washed up well, the bottom sheet had elastic all the way around, and the color was solid. They are fantastic sheets for the price.
The only problem is: here it is December 28 (three days after Christmas) and my dad has insisted that I order him a second set TODAY so that he doesn't have to do without these sheets while one set is out at the laundry! Ha.

Luxury European 200-gram 100% Cotton Flannel Sheet Set Review

Luxury European 200-gram 100% Cotton Flannel Sheet Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Yes, this is a heavier weight flannel sheet set. The Amazon product description states these are 200 grams per square meter. The package states 6 ounces per square yard. I calculated this at one time and the two are roughly equivalent, but not equal.
Color samples had not been posted when I purchased this set, so I had no idea what shade to expect when I placed my order. I ordered the color cypress in the queen size. I expected a shade of green. Upon arrival, the color could best be described as a sage with HEAVY gray tones. In low light the color appears to be a dingy gray color--not pretty or impressive.
While the sheets are thick and will most likely last for years, they are not as soft as I expected. They are in the okay range for softness, but not the WOW!!! range of softness. I have purchased the Pinzon 150 gram flannel sheets in the past and the 150s were softer, but not as thick as this set. Another comparison would be the fabric in a chamois shirt. These sheets are not as soft or thick as the fabric in a high quality chamois shirt. But, they are thicker than a regular flannel shirt. The softness may be a function of the quality of the cotton used to make them.
This set did not produce a huge amount of dryer lint when washed/dried. I wash my sheets separately and do not crowd my loads to reduce fabric friction. I never wash my flannels in heavy detergent. Instead I use a sensitive skin bubble bath (one cap full) or conditioning shampoo. I also don't use a fabric softener in the dryer. In offering softness comparisons I am referring to sheets that have been laundered in this way.
At a price point of $34.99 on these sheets, I won't be buying a second set. While there is nothing "wrong" with them--they are flannel and they will cover a mattress, they are not the SOFT luxury flannel I had envisioned.
Update 10-13-2007: I have purchased "Pinzon 200 Gram Supima Velvet Flannel Queen Sheet Set" in two colors-Poinsettia and Saffron. I will add them to this review as a comparison after they arrive.
Update 10-25-2007: The Velvet flannel sheets arrived and they are WONDERFUL--MUCH nicer than this set--MUCH softer!
I gifted one set of the 200 gram Velvet flannel sheets to a newlywed couple who have an 18" mattress. They asked if the sheets would fit on their deep mattress. I had to go back to my computer to check, but I also grabbed my tape measure to measure my own set after they were washed.
I also wanted to compare the fitted sheet depth on the 200 gram velvet flannel set to this 200 gram set. The 200 gram cypress set had a depth on the corner fitted sheet seam from the top of the seam to the bottom of the elastic of 14". The velvet flannel set had a depth of 14.5".
The product description for this set does not state the mattress depth this set will accomodate, but the product description on the velvet flannel sheet set says it will accomodate an 18" mattress. It seems like the corner seam would be at least 18" to accomodate an 18" mattress. I am waiting for the new bride to get back to me on whether or not the sheets fit their bed.
I also discovered a hole in the cypress sheets when I was measuring the seam. I had laundered them, but had not put them to use yet or I would have caught this sooner. The 3/4" hole was directly beside the seam--the fabric most likely got caught in the serger knife when it was being sewn.
As for the color on the 200 gram velvet sheets, the Poinsettia color is NOT the color of a Poinsettia that I have ever laid eyes on. It is instead a soft brick color-a more versatile year round color. The Saffron is a doe skin shade.
With the current price difference, this set is a better buy than the velvet flannel sheets. However, the velvet flannel sheets are MUCH nicer. You won't be disappointed if you wait for a sale on the velvet flannel sheets.
Update: I have discovered that Amazon prices are not always the best deal. Be sure to check the new and used section from other sellers to find the lowest price after you access the product page of the item you are wanting to buy.

The cover fits very well over my comforter and the buttons hold the whole thing together well.
The only negative thing I have to say is that the dots on it are not part of the fabric itself but printed on, so the dots themselves are not soft and fuzzy. This is not really an issue as there is plenty of white fuzzy area on the cover. I have not yet had the chance to wash it, and I hope the dots don't bleed!

Pinzon 160-Gram Yarn-Dyed Flannel Standard Sham, Serenity Plaid Review

I am very happy with this set. It was purchased for a 13 year old boy's room and the pattern is perfect. The set is also really soft and cozy. I also like that the pattern is masculine without being dark and overbearing. The background is creamy and the brown is approximately the color of coffee. No complaints and I only wish I had purchased this same set for the other boy!

This soft, supple 160-gram flannel sham is the perfect accessory to Pinzon's flannel sheets and duvets. Expertly made in Portugal with 160 grams of cotton per square meter, the fabric is lightly brushed to give it the soft, warm flannel texture and is pre-washed for durability. For superior patterning on both sides, the fabric begins with yarn-dyed cotton that is woven into a wide array of colorful plaids. The standard sham measures 20 by 26 inches and has an envelope closure. Easy to care for, the sham can be washed and dried at home. Mix and match various colors and patterns from Pinzon's flannel, yarn-dyed flannel, and velvet bedding for a layered look with an ultra-soft feel.
Fabric Definition Flannel: Flannel fabrics are noted for their fuzzy softness, warmth, and durability, and they can be dyed or printed. Thought to have been popularized in Wales in the 17th century, flannel was an all-wool fabric made of woolen or worsted yarns, with a brushed surface and a soft napped finish obscuring its weave. Flannel may be plain woven or twill woven and, today, most flannel fabrics are made of cotton fibers or synthetic rayon fibers that are slightly napped on both sides to resemble the old woolen or worsted yarn weaves. A wide range of flannel weights and textures is available. The fabric weight and quality of the napping affect the warmth and softness of the fabric. Many people prefer flannel bedding during the cold, winter months, but some flannel weights are appropriate in breatheability and comfort all year long.

While looking for new flannel sheets, the print on these caught my eye, and at $40 for a set of California King sheets, I figured it would be worth the gamble. The print goes across the bed rather than lengthwise, which was a surprise, but the overall look is very homey and cozy.
I was concerned that the sheets would shrink considerably after the first wash and dry - but no. In fact, they softened up beautifully and fit the large mattress perfectly. The flannel used in these sheets is excellent quality and left very little lint in the dryer screen. This is definitely a best buy.

Bought two of these shams and the matching duvet cover. Didn't even realize that this was an Amazon label. Excellent quality, feel, materials. The weight is heavy, the construction is very nice, the flaps to cover the back have a generous overlap. The colors are right on to the images. I would certainly buy another set if needed. I finally figured out that a sham that uses standard sizes is just that, use a standard pillow; strange but no one will say that. I bought therma pillows that we really too tall to sleep on comfortably but they make perfect sham fillers, nice, fat and resilient. They've gone through 5 washes in an front-loading HE washer and the colors are as good as ever.

History of the Region Portugal's major textile factories are located in Guimaraes, known as the "cradle" or "birth city" of Portugal, since it is home to the castle of Portugal's first king. As one of the country's most historic cities with well-preserved monuments, it is a popular tourist attraction. Among other sites to see are two squares with outdoor cafes and balconied houses, called Praça de Santiago and Largo da Oliveira. At Largo da Oliveira are the old Town Hall and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, with a Gothic shrine erected in 1340 standing before it. There are many legends about its origins, but a popular story says it marks the spot where Wamba, elected king of the Visigoths, refused his title and drove a pole into the ground swearing that he would not reign until it blossomed, and it sprouted immediately. Guimaraes hosts an annual 3-day festival of medieval art and costume in the first week of August, which dates from the middle of the 15th century and includes a torchlight procession and a medieval parade. Not only renowned for textiles and historical sites, Guimaraes is in the heart of the "Vinho Verde" region, so called for its locally produced fresh, young "green wines."

I had read positive reviews elsewhere for these flannel sheets, but was very disappointed. They smelled bad when unpacked, and after the first laundering, were badly pilled. A huge bundle of lint came off them too, not a good sign. I wouldn't buy these again, and would return them if I could.

Thanks to Amazon, I have become a self professed 'sheet snob'; luckily for me (courtesy of Amazon) at an affordable price!
Last year, for the first time I had the fortunate opportunity to purchase and experience 500 and 800 thread count sheets made my High Country Linens that I bought here. My Mom, my Aunt and myself fell in love with them so much that we donated all of our other sheets and replaced them with these wonderful sheets. I STILL LOVE them as they are durable, silky smooth with a nice, weighty feel vs the old 150 or 200 thread count flimsy sheets I was used to.
I have trouble getting to sleep at night and also staying asleep at night and one of the worst things are when you have little kids is to be sleep deprived. One of the worst ways to wake is wake up in my opinion is at 2am shivering from being cold even though you have socks, sheets and your blanket covering you. Although my beloved sheets (Yes, I'm a little nutty over sheets) were FABULOUS, I had to admit that I was still freezing on the really cold nights. I grew up with my parents giving me flannel sheets during the winter time and although they WERE warmer, I HATED the pilling effect after a few washes so I refused to give in. Until that is, I found out there was such a thing as 'velvel flannel'.
Talk about the WOW effect!!! When I took them out of the package, they were smooth but sort of heavy feeling from being flat in the package. I immediately washed them and I could tell when I took them out of the washer that I was going to love them (I DO use fabric softener but I'll be looking to change to something else so that it doesn't deteriorate the fabric more than it needs to over time). I was literally grinning with delight when I took them out of the dryer and my husband was rolling his eyes at me since I had JUST changed our sheets last night.
We have a 15" mattress that I have trouble fitting our waterproof mattress cover over but this sheet had plenty of room to spare so I do believe that it will easily fit a thicker mattress. Surprisingly, even though there was more room, it didn't get loose over night either when I tucked the excess under my mattress, which was nice.
Talk about SMOOTH, luxurious, soft and oh so warm and cozy!!!! I didn't wake once last night from being cold or even hot, everything was perfect! When I put these new velvet flannel sheets on, our little one even proclaimed that he was sleeping on them with Mommy instead of his bed and even had me change out his Pottery Barn Kids choo choo pillow because he decided it was 'dirty' and that Mommy's was COMFIER although his was just changed last night too.
There was some very lightweight lint in the dryer but that was to be expected with flannel. It's my hope that over time, there will be less so it stays in my sheets vs losing it's softness over time. But usually there is a TEENY bit of pilling with even good flannel even in the first wash and there is NONE whatesoever on these sheets!!!! What surprised me is that I dried them on Medium for 80 minutes and they came out bone dry. I expected them to require more drying time or on high heat (I was worried about shrinkage which did NOT happen or if any did, it did not effect mine at all.)
I got the bone color and ordered extra standard pillows and it's great that the dye lots match perfectly (I've had them arrived mismatched before in other brands), it's a nice, soft color but it's a bit on the 'yellow' spectrum for a bone color in my opinion. It IS still nice...sort of a cream - yellow color but if I had my choice, I would have rather have had a more neutral ivory / bone color instead. I LOVE white sheets in the summer but for some reason, I like a more muted color in the winter and these are nice.
I purchased mine when they had these in the gold box deals for $39.99 for the king size and $5.99 for extra pillow cases and I'm kicking myself for not ordering more!!! :-(
My wishes / complaints? I wish they had more standard pillow cases in stock, I WISH they had the 200 thread count in SUPIMA velvet flannel in a TWIN and FULL size for my kid's beds!!!! And of course, I wish that they'd run that $39.99 special again!!! :-) Oh! And more COLORS!!!! I'd LOVE a taupe color in these sheets!!!
Even if I had to pay the current $79.99 on these, I still would NOT regret it, they are scrumptious!!!! You will not regret it! I also think that these would make a WONDERFUL gift!!! Just be sure to get some for yourself too!! :-) Here's to some happy, comfy ZZZZZ's....

I bought a pair of these shams along with the duvet cover. I am very happy with my purchase. The colors are very true to what is published here on Amazon. The flannel is soft and brushed and is not overly thick like pajamas. I did not want the P.J. look on my bed :) As usual, Amazon came through with on time delivery!

These sheets are excellent in every regard. Nicely cut, plenty of coverage even after a wash and high temperature dry. Don't bother with thin, low quality flannel that pills and becomes transparent after a few washings....This is the way to go. The solid colors are the same weight and quality for a little less...We have both solid and plaid; both are an excellent value!
