The term coverlet refers to two pieces of fabric -- not flimsy like Indian bedspreads -- that are stitched together around the edges and quilted with a simple running stitch.
The design makes them so important. The hand blocking is visually similar to American pieced quilts, and was probably an influence on them. Some have bold colors in a strong graphic design that you'd see in an Amish quilt. Some use color to create a 3-D effect similar to the American pattern Baby Blocks. There are many choices. These fabrics are a subject of scholarship and museum collections. Handmade, they are nevertheless very affordable. The vendor in India send the quilt the same day it was ordered. It arrived quickly and was safely packaged, with a thank you note. Highly recommended.
