Stokke Xplory Basic - 2009 Review

Stokke Xplory Basic - 2009

(More customer reviews)
This was the first stroller we bought for our baby, but we no longer use it due to several design flaws that turned out to be deal-breakers.
First the good stuff:
The height of the child seat or bassinet (they call it the "baby bag") is wonderful for a variety of reasons. The stroller is quite stable despite the height of the seat. The stair climbing feature - the rear wheels fold under -is great. The optional bag that sits on the lower platform (spare seat?) is very useful. Great for putting heavy things in while going shopping. The stroller can double as a child seat in restaurants. Easy to remove and wash fabric parts. Good warranty service.
Now the bad:
My main point - the design of the stroller around the single aluminum support beam has created some design limitations that they have had to work around, and their workarounds are not very good in many cases.
The Baby Bag is too short, and the cutout for the beam makes it even shorter practically. Our child had outgrown it by 4 months and we had to put him in the seat and recline it instead, which was not ideal.
The foot rest is very badly thought out - it needs to be removed entirely from the seat in order to change from forward to rear-facing (again, this is because of the beam), and it requires three hands to adjust or remove it - one for each of the catches on the left and right sides, and another to move the rest. Last time I checked I only had two hands.
This wouldn't be much of a problem if it weren't necessary to change between forward and rear facing so often, but since the seat will not recline very much in the forward-facing position (the beam again) you will find yourself executing this maneuver regularly. I don't know why they didn't design the footrest in two parts, that could fold like on a wheelchair, so it could clear the beam without having to remove the rest.
The safety bar for the seat doesn't open, and it's positioned too close to the seat, so getting the child in and out is difficult. It is removable, but it's not a quick procedure. Also you're not supposed to use this bar to carry the seat with the child in it, which defeats part of the purpose of having it there in the first place.
It's difficult to fold the stroller, you need to use both hands and one foot to close it, and if you start off with the seat rear-facing, you'll need to remove the seat first as well. This makes it less than ideal for getting into a taxi, for example, unless you have someone else there to hold the baby, and even so it takes too long.
The canopy is not waterproof. In a mild to heavy rain, water will soak through the fabric and drip inside. There is a plastic raincover , but as it zips to the front of the canopy, rather than covering it, it does not protect from water adequately. Also there is a fabric portion of the raincover which has the same problem as the canopy.
The mount for the optional sun parasol is not adjustable, so if you recline the seat the parasol cannot provide shade for the baby. Also, the flexible metal stem for the parasol itself is very stiff and doesn't adjust well, and it breaks easily, which will happen when you attempt to move the parasol into a useful position when the seat is reclined.
The oval handle is quite adjustable and comfortable for a range of users, however it's very hard to hang a bag from there, and there aren't really any other places to hang one on this stroller. Forget the small bag they sell to hang on the beam, it's a terrible solution. The lower bag is great for carrying shopping and such, but you don't want to have to always be reaching down there for bottles, food, toys, etc. and when the seat is forward-facing with the footrest installed, it's hard to get to that bag.
Lastly, the quality is not as good as one would expect given the price. The wheels are plastic and scratch and look bad quickly. The rear yoke for the back wheels isn't very strong so if you use the stair-climbing feature with much weight on the stroller it will deteriorate and break - we had to have ours repaired. Admittedly, this is due to the fact that we were abusing the stroller by climing stairs with it with the child in the seat (which they say not to do, presumably for safety reasons), but designers should be realistic and realize that if they allow you to fold the wheels under to climb or descend stairs more easily, then people are going to do that with the child in the stroller because in many cases there is no other alternative (what, take the baby out and leave it on the landing of the stairs while you go down to retrieve the stroller?). Also, there was a problem that developed where the seat would start slipping down. Our retailer contacted Stokke and they provided us with a little metal shim that solved the problem, but the annoying thing was that the instructions for this fix had a date printed on them that was before our purchase date - if they know this is a problem, why don't they provide the shim when you buy the stroller in the first place.
I hope that they will eventually redesign this and solve most of these problems. With the exception of the limitation on how the seat can recline, I think all of these flaws are solveable. But until they come out with a second version, I wouldn't spend money on this one. We got lucky - when ours broke, Stokke replaced the entire chassis, wheels and all (good warranty service, like I said) so we essentially had a new stroller, and we sold it and got enough to cover the cost of the stroller we had already bought to replace it. (a Quinny Buzz, btw - also not perfect but more useable for our purposes).

Britax Blink Stroller Review

I bought this stroller after experience with my 2 kids and reviewing features on many umbrella strollers and I love it & highly recommend it.
Pros:
Tall Handles - I am 5'8" and my husband is 6', so the freebie umbrella stroller we suffered with for the past 5 years had us uncomfortably hunching over the handles and preferring to carry our toddler.
Weight Capacity - Accommodates a child weighing up to 55 pounds. For reference, my 5 year old daughter weighs 45 pounds. She is a little scrawny, but we bought this for our 18 month old son. Hope to use it for the next 2 to 3 years. Most umbrella strollers only accommodate kids up to 30-35 pounds. For reference, my 18 month old son weighs 24 pounds and he is on the small side, so he could only use a standard umbrella stroller for another 6-12 months. I saw other people looking for strollers for older disabled children, so this would fit the bill for their special needs as well.
Folds Up Small - We have an awesome big stroller and a big SUV. Once you put the big stroller in the back of the SUV, the family has limited room to pack for a road trip. Bigger strollers also do not seem ideal for air travel - in my opinion. They definitely would not allow room for luggage in a rental car. We are planning road trips and plane trips with our family of 4, so I wanted as many big stroller features as possible in an umbrella stroller. This one has them!
Portability - The stroller had a strap on the back side so that when you fold it up, it can be slung over your shoulder & carried easily, if necessary. The stroller also came with a black bag, similar to a gate check bag, available for $9.99 at Babies R Us and this website. I thought that was a bonus feature, since I did not know it was included and had planned to buy one.
Full Recline - I almost bought a different umbrella stroller until I realized it did not recline fully. This is invaluable for the family on the go because toddlers can nap comfortable or lay back for a diaper change instead of dragging them in to a nasty public restroom.
Swivel Wheels - The front wheels can swivel in a circle, which makes turns easier. The wheels can also be locked to not swivel, which apparently works better for rough terrain.
Stability - You can hang a fairly heavy diaper bag on the back of the stroller and it won't flip over without the kid in the seat. Our free umbrella stroller was not that stable! My child can also get in and out safely without flipping it over on himself and he is 99% monkey.
Cons -
Small Storage Basket - Our free umbrella stroller didn't have a basket at all, so this is more of a pro in my opinion because something is better than nothing.
No Drink/Snack Holder for Parents or Kid - You can buy universal easily attachable one very cheaply at Babies R Us and on this website. Problem solved.
Wheels - I wish the wheels were rubber and not plastic. I'm not sure if it would have increased the cost substantially or if it makes a big difference, but it seems like it would have made this a better product. The ride/drive seems perfectly fine as it is though.
Price - At retail, this stroller is pretty pricey. I found it for $69.99 with $5 shipping, which clinched the deal. I probably would have paid up to $100 for it, maybe more if we were on kid number one or still planned to have another kid.

The QueenB is the best stroller there is, ever, period. I have owned and tried many high end boutique strollers, and this is head and shoulders above anything I have yet come across.
We've had ours from about 18 months. The more I use it, the more I'm impressed with it. It is a dream.
I have heard the criticism that its hard to turn in tight spaces. Bologna! Its is the EASIEST to turn in tight spaces. And of this point you may want to make additional note in the manual or such as I can see how people may make that inaccurate conclusion. If you "push forward" into the turn so as to put weight on the front wheels, they straighten out and make tight turns tough. But if you "push down" on the rear to take weight off the front wheels, it is the easiest tight "turn on a dime" ever. It actually turns itself. I can load the QueenB with a 1 year old and a 5 year old (with toddler seat) plus the ever full diaper bag, and navigate any department store with one hand... like a dream. There is no other stroller that could do this. (Admittedly if you try turning it like its a Graco, you could frustrate at it.)
Not to mention its just smooth as ice, with the oh-so-clever shock absorbers (kudos to the designer on that one) and the large air inflated tires. I enjoy just pushing it; I imagine for the kids its even smoother. So solid and sturdy, even with the adjustable handles, which I worried would get wobbly and "give" over time, it is a solid tank. We are increasingly impressed, dazzled, and amazed the more we use it.
Is anything wrong with it? Yes, a few downsides. Its heavy to lift, and is a large stroller; this is minor to me. The cup holder isn't fantastic; thats irritating, but also minor. The foot brake is solid and effective at being a brake, but is hard to release with your foot; sometimes I need to bend down and use my hand to release it. All minor complaints when compared to its upsides.
Well I just wanted to take a minute to give feedback on this fantastic stroller. The engineers did a great job.

Stokke Xplory Newborn Stroller Review

This stroller is the absolute best stroller out there!
We purchased the Stokke Xplory when our son was born, in August of '08, and have been extremely happy with it. We are now using it for our daughter- we never took a break from using it.
My husband and myself are both the oldest of large families, so we really know about babies and the products that are out there. Because of it's steep price, we thought long and hard before we purchased the Xplory. And- It was the best decision we have ever made.
First- it is the only stroller that is able to have the baby at a normal, easily reachable height. This is an extremely important factor not only for parent-child bonding as advertised, but even for parental sanity! Taking care of a baby is back-breaking work. Literally. All the bending down, and lifting up. For some reason, all other strollers/prams have the baby located pretty close to the ground. This was always something that frustrated us- why should we have to be bending to the ground every single time we need to take the baby in and out of the carriage? Or even just to adjust something- give the baby a toy, a bottle,a pacifier? The Xplory was the answer to that problem. The bassinet/seat (not just the Handlebars!) is height adjustable. So it can be kept at a high height, and for the times that you do want the baby close to the ground (like when you are sitting) you can adjust it. It is also the easiest thing to adjust- just a flip of the lever underneath the seat! And it can be done without removing the baby!
*adding to the above- now that we have a two year old and a new baby- the height is an incredible advantage- the baby is out of harm's way! My son always loves to "play" with his new sister, and this is the only place where she is comfortable and safe from her brother's little fingers except for our arms!
Second- The handlebars are adjustable as well. Not just the actual height of the center bar, but the angle of the handles. This ensures that anyone wheeling the carriage is comfortable doing so- at any height. My husband is 6'5- when he uses is, the bar is as high as it can go, handlebar adjusted accordingly. My little sisters babysit- they can adjust it to their height. Again, all of this is super easy to do- we are constantly changing it.
Third- It is a super-smooth ride. It feels like pushing air- even when my son weighed 30 lbs! It turns on a dime, it fits into narrow aisles, and it has hidden shock absorbers- so both the baby and the person wheeling hardly feel the bumps.
The Bassinet- carry cot was a life saver. It has a real, one inch mattress in it, and my son loved sleeping in it. He actually slept in it (as opposed to his crib) for the first five months of his life, and my daughter is doing the same.
It also has little pockets all around it for extra stuff- which is really useful, and fabric handles for carrying it around. (especially important if you live in a house with stairs!). These handles are really sturdy- we carried the baby around in it, and never had a problem.
The Seat was really great. It has 5 positions, two in the forward facing position, and three in the rear facing position. It is super-easy to turn the chair back and forth and can be done with the child inside. I have seen that some reviewers had a problem with the fact that in the forward facing position, it can not lie flat. This was never a problem for us. When our son was older, and wanted to sit forward facing, he wouldn't just fall asleep in the same way a younger baby does. And when he did get tired, he was happy to be turned around to the rear facing position to sleep- minimal distractions!
The shopping bag is really smartly done. When not in use, it folds neatly away at the foot of the stroller, and when you want to open it, it opens really big (roomy enough for three full sized bags of groceries). When folded and zipped, it can still hold some small things- we always have the rain-cover and a diaper or two in there.
Included in the purchase of the Xplory were a mosquito net, two rain-covers and a U-bracket for the bassinet. The U-bracket solves the age old problem of the bassinet leaning to one side.
We also purchased the Graco car-seat adapter- which is a snap to take on and off, and is a lifesaver for in and out of the car situations, the cupholder- which is located super conveniently at the center of the handlebars and the diaper bag.
All of the textiles come off easily, and wash with no problems- coming out as new looking as before they went in.
Of course, one of the main attributes of the Xplory is it's visual appeal. It is modern and sleek looking. It fits in with any modern style, and never fails to draw compliments- everywhere we go!
Oh- and the customer service is incredible! First of all, the Xplory comes with a THREE year warranty, (which, if you are looking into strollers, you know is quite long). Second, when you call them, there is hardly ever any wait time. All e-mails are responded to within 24 hours, if not less. They never made us feel stupid for calling- even when we called because we couldn't figure out how to remove the hood to wash it :), and were always cheerful and friendly- no matter how many times we called. It was and is an absolute pleasure to deal with them.
In conclusion:
We love this stroller and are confident that anyone who purchases it will too!

I love, love, love this stroller. I don't know what my triplets and I would do without it. It floats along over bumps and you can pull a nearly 360* turn. It has pockets galore. I use the hush bassinet on one side to hold two babies and have the joey seat to use once they are a little older. If you have triplets or twins +1, this is the stroller for you.
The only thing I would change it the under storage basket. It's a little small and hard to get thing in and out of. It's a small price to pay for this awesome stroller.
