I got Carefresh from the store as part of a starter set last year and I was sold. Of all the different types of bedding, Carefresh is the best for absorbing odor and moisture. One of my friend's husbands came over and marveled at how we kept the hamster room odor free. Yes, bedding makes all the difference. Wood shavings reek.
I started with Carefresh Colors, which is softer and prettier and more uniform in quality. However, that just shows up the hamster poop more and makes the cage look dirty faster. The hamsters don't like that, so they take all that poop and throw it out of the cage, so I then have poop all over the outside of the cage. No, regular Carefresh is better.
The batches of Carefresh seem irregular. It's hit or miss on how soft they are. Sometimes, they are rougher, like someone soaked a stack of newspapers in water, let them dry until they were hard and stiff, then tried to shred them. Sometimes, they are softer and fluffier. Either way, they work to absorb odor and the hamsters don't seem to care.
