(More customer reviews)I never believed pet store sales clerks when they said that Aspen shavings were better for guinea pigs than pine shavings until I tried them and found out for myself. I will never go back to pine. Pine shavings have an aromatic oil (the pine scent) which is irritating to guinea pigs. It can cause their eyes to water, etc.... This effect is made much worse when the pine shavings come into contact with urine. When I made the switch from pine to Aspen, I noticed that my guinea pig's eyes stopped watering almost immediately. She also seemed to enjoy being in her cage more and was perkier. It really is worth paying the higher price to give your guinea pig a good quality of life. The Aspen does produce a sharper edge shaving, so try to find a brand that offers a softer chip. I use the NEPCO brand and have been extremely satisfied.
