(More customer reviews)A large tear in my down comforter led me to Amazon in search of a new one. As a male grad student on a budget, I wanted to buy something that looked adult (but not too feminine) and came with more than just a comforter, as cheaply as possible. At the same time, I wasn't sure if something THIS cheap was going to come back to haunt me. For the most part, my fears were ill-placed.
Everything came together in a very standard bed-in-a-bag clear vinyl getup (see my photo), and I can confirm that there are seven (7) pieces - comforter, dust ruffle, two shams, and three decorative pillows. The brown color generally appears as shown in the picture, but the way in which the silver is sewn can variously give a green, blue, or gray/silver hue. To see what I mean, refer to my photos, in which I have my old, pale green sheets that actually appear to match in lower light (I've uploaded photos with both on-camera flash and no flash). To me, that's fantastic - from the tiny Amazon product picture, I expected the floral pattern to be screen printed in silver. Instead, it looks to be machine sewn (in a sheen silver thread) but hardly feels raised at all; it adds a little dimension yet (seemingly) won't "pick" or deteriorate over time. I'll update this review when I find a sheet color that better matches the design.
I'm pleased with the material of the comforter; it has a slight sheen, as seen in the picture, but not so much as to look or feel like a sleeping bag. The underside of the comforter is a completely different material that is extremely soft and comfortable, yet has enough friction that the comforter stays in place - a HUGE issue I've had with down comforters. Curiously, the bottom side of the comforter is a totally different, more "mocha," shade of brown. I would not have deemed this an issue but for that, if the comforter is turned up slightly at the edges, a bit of the lighter brown will show. Because I was hesitant already to go with the brown-silver color scheme (which, as it turns out, looks fantastic otherwise), this is an issue that warrants docking a star. (See my photo for details.)
Yet this comforter is extremely light, too. Of course, the stuffing feels like it's cotton and the comforter just barely manages an inch in thickness but, given the price point, that's understandable. It is still perfectly warm for me and the fabric seems to trap heat in well. (Again, I'll update after the warmer months as to whether it traps heat TOO well.) In fact, after experiencing my girlfriend's comforter and duvet cover setup, which is so heavy as to crush the feet and make back-sleeping almost impossible, this comforter is my ideal balance of weight and warmth. Nevertheless, you should be on notice that it is on the thin and light side. The comforter seems true-to-size and drapes off of the sides and foot of the mattress generously, which further helps it to stay in place overnight. However, it definitely does not drape to the extent suggested by the product picture; given the height of the mattress there, I would guess that it actually depicts a queen size comforter on a full size bed. As an additional note, the dust ruffle feels like camping tent material but, considering that I don't have to touch it when I sleep and it doesn't LOOK like how it feels, I see it as a non-issue.
I was obviously predisposed to like this set because I chose to order it over thousands of other choices. It has a bit of high-end/designer flair while possessing a masculine element that satisfies my inner bachelor. Equally important to me, it was super cheap. Ultimately, despite a pair of shortcomings I would expect from a product at this price point, there are a number of surprises that, for me, make this set a keeper.
